The Cliffs at Walnut Cove Hosts UNC Asheville’s New Chancellor

Mary Grant

Chancellor Mary K. Grant was officially appointed as Chancellor at UNC Asheville in January. The installation ceremony took place on September 19th.

She was appointed UNC Asheville’s seventh chancellor. Previously, she served for 12 years as president of Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in North Adams, Massachusetts. Chancellor Grant has been hard at work these past nine months continuing her passion as an advocate for public higher education, civic engagement and community service.

Chancellor Grant was a guest at The Cliffs at Walnut Cove for a special wine dinner where members had the opportunity to meet both Chancellor Grant and her husband, Jim Canavan. “It is important for us to get involved with our communities here in Asheville and the members of Walnut Cove are gracious supporters in so many areas” says Chancellor Grant.

Member Engagement with UNC-Asheville:

Walnut Cove homeowners are supporting the new women’s golf team through scholarships and endowments.  Coach Bre Hall is recruiting for the fall of 2016.

On another front, fifteen Walnut Cove residents are actively mentoring student athletes at UNC Asheville sharing business and life experiences as well as developing long term relationships. The Mentors have become BULLDOG fans cheering for their local NCAA teams.

Members can be seen walking through the extensive university gardens, looking at the art works created by students and faculty and viewing the stars from the Lookout Observatory.

Walnut Cove residents have also taken the opportunity to teach as adjunct professors sharing professional skills and real world experiences in the classroom.
“Having a university so close, offering so much, adds to the lifestyle of our homeowners” says Dave Bailey, Walnut Cove Realty Sales Executive and homeowner.

The Walnut Cove community congratulates Chancellor Grant on her new position and welcomes her to Asheville, NC.

UNC Asheville offers the best collegiate experience within a liberal arts university environment for students and the community at large.
